Year erected: 1653

What is the history of the property?
The first building on Estate Shoys, where The Buccaneer is located, was constructed by Charles Martel, a Knight of Malta, all the way back in 1653. In 1733, when the Danes bought the island of St. Croix, their Governor von Prock built his home on the estate. He erected the Sugar Mill that still stands on site. The next owner was Michael Shoy, for whom the estate is named, and he began growing cotton there. After that came the Heyliger Company and its cattle ranch. The Armstrong family bought that ranch in 1922 and in 1947 opened The Buccaneer as a hotel with 11 rooms. It was the first hotel on the island to be built and operated by an island family. Now, nearly 75 years later, the resort is the oldest family-owned resort in the entire Caribbean. Elizabeth Armstrong is the third generation of her family to own and run the property.

The property has grown and expanded over the years, and the architecture of each element reflects the era in which it was built. A significant piece of history and architecture is the old Sugar Mill, which stands near the main building and which is a popular site for weddings and special, customized private dinners.

Deluxe Oceanfront Oceanview King or Queen Room The spacious oceanfronts rooms are perched above the shore between Grotto and Mermaid Beaches. They sport distinctive 16-foot high wood ceilings and picture windows that frame magnificent sea views. Each room has a sitting area, and a stone patio that fronts the sea below. Just a minute's walk to either beach, these rooms offer the advantage of optionally connecting to another to accommodate families requiring two or more rooms. The Buccaneer Beach & Golf Resort on Trademark St Croix USVI offers amazing accommodations in the main house with spacious and clean rooms that are comfortable and perfect for a relaxing stay. Although some guests were initially given the wrong category of room or were not impressed with the basic room compared to the price paid, they ended up being very satisfied with their stay. The beds are described as glorious and the view amazing, providing a therapeutic atmosphere. The only negative comment was that for the price, some guests expected a microwave in the room. Some rooms were far away from amenities and the beach, but overall guests were happy with the king and queen bed bedrooms and the great views offered in the main house. Despite some plumbing issues, the accommodations at The Buccaneer Beach & Golf Resort are splendid.

The Buccaneer Beach & Golf Resort in St Croix boasts a beautiful property and excellent staff, making guests feel like family from the moment they arrive. Most guests found the staff to be hospitable, friendly and accommodating with special mentions for Lea from the front desk, Vicki from the Spa and Andreas as the property manager. Some guests did encounter a few rude or unhelpful staff members, but overall, the staff was professional and helpful, especially during breakfast service. Ken the bartender and Patrice at the Terrace Bar were two other standout members of the team. While there were a few issues with staff motivation, most guests found the staff to be exceptionally nice and friendly, making their stay at the resort an enjoyable and unforgettable experience.

The Buccaneer Beach & Golf Resort in Trademark St Croix USVI offers guests a variety of stunning beaches to enjoy during their stay. With Mermaid Beach and Grotto Beach offering some of the best snorkeling experiences on the island and the Beach Bar providing excellent service and drinks on the sand, guests have everything they need for a perfect day in the sun. The beaches are kept clean and well-maintained, providing a private and quiet oasis for guests. Although some entrance points to the water can be dangerous, the lovely beach staff ensure that guests are informed and safe. In addition, the Buccaneer's excellent staff are praised as some of the best ever, making for an exceptional beach vacation experience.
